A wellness community centered around service to others and the love of dogs.

There is a positive impact that veteran companion dogs can have on the lives of disabled veterans and first responders dealing with mental health challenges. Service dogs are trained to provide various forms of assistance and support, including emotional support, mobility assistance, and even specific tasks tailored to the individual's needs.

Here are some ways in which service dogs can benefit individuals, particularly veterans and first responders, with mental health concerns:

  1. Emotional Support: veteran service dogs can offer constant companionship and emotional support, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The presence of a loyal and trained canine can provide a sense of security and comfort.
  2. Crisis Intervention: Some PTSD service dogs are trained to recognize signs of distress or an impending mental health crisis. They can then take specific actions, such as nudging or alerting, to help their handler manage or mitigate the situation.
  3. Social Support: Having a service dog can encourage social interactions and help reduce feelings of isolation. The presence of a dog often serves as a conversation starter, making it easier for individuals to engage with others.
  4. Routine and Structure: Caring for a service dog can provide a sense of purpose and routine. Establishing a daily schedule and focusing on the needs of the dog can contribute to a more stable and structured lifestyle.
  5. Physical Activity: Service dogs require regular exercise, which can encourage their handlers to engage in physical activities. Exercise is known to have positive effects on mental health, including stress reduction and improved mood.
  6. Improved Sleep: For those with PTSD or other mental health conditions affecting sleep, having a service dog can contribute to better sleep quality. The calming presence of the dog and their ability to wake their handler from nightmares can be particularly beneficial.

It's essential to note that while service dogs can be highly beneficial, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. The specific needs and preferences of each individual should be considered when determining the type of assistance a service dog can provide. Additionally, proper training for both the dog and the handler is crucial for a successful partnership.

Cadence Wellness has created a program that train service dogs for veterans and first responders, it's important to work closely with experienced trainers, mental health professionals, and organizations specializing in this field. Ensuring the well-being of both the service dog and their handler is key to the success of these programs.

Cadence Wellness uses a comprehensive approach in supporting clients with service animals. Creating a space for the continued practice and implementation of veteran service dogs into the lives of individuals is crucial for ensuring the long-term success and well-being of both the handler and the service dog.

Here are a few considerations that  contribute to the effectiveness of our support groups:

  1. Ongoing Training and Education: Providing continued training and education for both service dogs and their handlers is essential. This  includes regular check-ins, refresher courses, and access to resources that promote the well-being and effectiveness of the service dog team.
  2. Community Support: Facilitating a sense of community among individuals with veteran companion dogs is beneficial. This involves support groups, peer mentorship programs, and online forums where handlers can share experiences, tips, and advice.
  3. Therapeutic Programs: Integrating therapeutic programs into can enhance the mental health benefits of service dogs. This could include activities such as art therapy, mindfulness practices, or group therapy sessions specifically designed for individuals with service animals.
  4. Health and Wellness Services: We provide a holistic approach to health and wellness by offering services that address both the physical and mental well-being of clients. This includes access to fitness programs, nutrition guidance, and mental health counseling.
  5. Collaboration with Professionals: Cadence Wellness has a good collaboration with mental health professionals, veterinarians, and experienced trainers to ensure that your programs are evidence-based and align with best practices.
  6. Client-Centered Approach: We tailor our support programs to the individual needs and preferences of each client. Recognizing that every service dog team is unique, and a personalized approach can enhance the effectiveness of your services.
  7. Advocacy and Awareness: We engage in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of service dogs for individuals with mental health challenges. This helps reduce stigma, increase understanding, and promote the wider acceptance of service dogs in various settings.

Remember, the journey of integrating a service dog into our life is ongoing, and providing ongoing support and resources can significantly contribute to the success and well-being of both the individual and our service dog.

Incorporating service dog training into therapy sessions conducted by Cadence Wellness is a unique and innovative approach that can provide comprehensive support for individuals with mental health challenges.

Here's how we integrate service dog training into our therapeutic practice:

  1. Assessment and Treatment Planning: Conduct a thorough assessment to understand the client's mental health needs and challenges. Collaborate with the client to develop a treatment plan that includes specific goals related to both mental health and service dog training.
  2. Incorporate Training Goals into Therapy Sessions: Integrate service dog training goals into therapy sessions. This could involve setting aside time during sessions to work on specific training exercises, reinforcing the bond between the client and the service dog.
  3. Behavioral Therapy Techniques: Apply behavioral therapy techniques to address any behavioral issues or challenges faced by the service dog. Use positive reinforcement and other evidence-based behavioral interventions to shape desired behaviors.
  4. Crisis Intervention and Coping Skills: If the service dog is trained to provide crisis intervention or support during moments of distress, work with the client to develop and practice coping skills. This might include specific cues the service dog responds to during times of heightened anxiety or stress.
  5. Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Functions: Explore and incorporate the emotional support functions of the service dog into therapy. Discuss how the presence of the dog contributes to emotional regulation, comfort, and a sense of security for the client.
  6. Relationship Dynamics: Explore the dynamics of the client's relationship with their service dog within the therapeutic context. Address any emotional or psychological aspects related to the bond between the client and the dog.
  7. Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques: Use mindfulness and grounding techniques during training sessions to enhance the client's awareness of the present moment. This can be beneficial for both the client and the service dog in maintaining focus and connection.
  8. Collaboration with Dog Trainers: Collaborate with experienced service dog trainers to ensure that training methods align with therapeutic goals. Regular communication with the dog trainer can facilitate a coordinated approach to address both mental health and training needs.
  9. Documentation and Progress Tracking: Keep detailed records of the client's progress in both mental health and service dog training. Document the integration of training into therapy and track improvements in the client's overall well-being.
  10. Education and Resources: Provide education and resources to the client about the benefits of the human-animal bond, service dog laws, and ongoing training needs. Empower the client to take an active role in the training process.
  11. Ethical Considerations: Consider ethical considerations, including the well-being of the service dog, client confidentiality, and any relevant legal or licensing requirements related to the integration of service dog training into therapy.

This integrated approach, combining therapy and service dog training, recognizes the interconnectedness of mental health and the human-animal bond. It requires a collaborative effort between the therapist, client, and dog trainer to ensure a positive and effective therapeutic experience.
